“Don’t be afraid, just trust me”..
It’s funny how we can say words like this to our children, expecting them to obey without any hesitation, but when it comes to our fears and worries, we just can’t seem to listen to our own advice.
I have struggled with fear for a long time. I worry about everything, over-analyze most things, and always seem to get myself worked up over nothing. Ask anyone in my family what my biggest strong hold is, and you will hear a loud resounding “Fear”.
In the past few years I have developed anxiety, and at times it can really hold me back. It’s so frustrating to find things that I used to do with ease, now take a lot more strength to complete.
My oldest daughter is a wonderful, high-spirited, fun-loving, out-going little girl.. but unfortunately, she seems to have developed my same fearful tenancies.
As a mom, I find myself repeatedly telling her “Don’t be scared, just trust me, I’m right here.” I say these words in hopes that it will calm the storm that’s welling up inside of her, but from my own experience, I know how powerful fear can be.
I wrestle with my anxiety every day. It’s a challenge to choose faith when my flesh wants to coward away. But I know that this is not the way that The Lord wants me to live my life.
I have been told that it says “Do not fear” 365 times in The Bible, that is one time for every day of the year. To me, this shows us that The Lord knows that we, as people, struggle so much with fear, that He felt it necessary to remind us every day not to. It is such a natural emotion for us, and yet it is so far from the way The Lord created us to be. He doesn’t want us to be afraid, He did not make us to fear.
For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
-2 Timothy 1:7
Jesus went to the cross for us to overcome all things, including our fears. We are not meant to stay in a place of worry because what kind of life is that? Whenever I say those words to my daughter: “Don’t be afraid, trust me” I know that that is what my Heavenly Father is saying to me. He has already given us everything that we need, to overcome our fears, and to be victorious in this battle, we just need to believe it, and walk in it.
The enemy will attack us in all of our weak areas. He knows the things that get to us, that break us, that make us feel inadequate to fight the battle. He tells us we can’t do it, we aren’t strong enough, aren’t courageous enough, but it’s a lie! In the flesh we can’t overcome the enemy’s attacks, but with Jesus all things are possible, we just need to believe.
We have to stop allowing the devil to speak his lies into our lives, we have to stand strong in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and say “Get thee behind me Satan!” We are the children of the Most High God, and He has equipped us with all that we need to win the fight. In those moments of fear, and despair, we need to use the weapons of warfare that The Lord has given us; Love, Prayer, Praise and Worship, and The Word of God. When we make the decision to use these weapons to fight against the lies of the enemy, then Satan will have to flee.
Lets choose to Look unto Jesus in our moments of despair, because that is when He will draw near to us, move through us, and give us the strength that we need to overcome.
No more living a life of fear, lets starts living a life of faith!
Fight the good fight of faith -1 Timothy 6:12.
Peace I leave with you,
my peace I give unto you:
not as the world giveth, give I unto you.
Let not your heart be troubled,
neither let it be afraid.
