As people, we all have our short comings, the areas that we struggle to overcome on a daily basis. We try, and we try, and we try to do whatever we can to make those flaws less prevalent in our lives, but all of our efforts just seem to go in vain. We may go awhile without them, but then all of a sudden something happens, something that pushes that little button in us, and it all comes flooding back. It’s like we take 2 steps forward, just to fall 5 steps back.
As I have mentioned before, I struggle a lot with anxiety, it is my biggest hurdle. I have tried many times to will myself in to overcoming it, but so far I have failed.
We think that if we just try a little harder, push ourselves a little bit further that maybe we will be able to have the victory… and when we don’t? well then we’re the losers that failed again.
Maybe for you it isn’t fear, maybe for you it’s anger, or laziness, or addiction, or depression. Maybe it’s not like that at all.. maybe you have all of your emotions in check, but no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to get promoted at work, or to get married. We disappoint the ones around us, the one’s who love us. They ask us “when is enough going to be enough”.. “why can’t you get over this?”.. “you need to try harder”. They mean well, but their words just breed more doubt, more insecurity, more defeat.
We beat ourselves up over and over again, and eventually we begin to give up. We think what’s the point? I will never overcome this, I’m just not strong enough…
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.
Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
– 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
This is the scripture that plays over and over again in my mind when life gets tough. When all of my failed attempts to be stronger, braver, better, fail, I cling to this hope. He is the only hope that we have. This world is full of so much heartache, and uncertainty, and rejection.. but our hope is not built on this world, our hope is built on Christ alone.
We have to remember in those moments of discouragement that His grace is sufficient for us. It doesn’t matter that we are not able to overcome, because He is more than able. He is the maker of heaven and of earth, and what seems like a mountain to us, is just an ant hill to Him.
What I love about this scripture is not only does Jesus tell us that His grace is enough for us, but we are also told to find joy in our failures, our short comings, our trials. You see, by having these areas in our life that we are unable to overcome on our own, we get to a place where we have to rely solely on Him. Without the places of despair, how are we going to get to see all of The Lord’s power, strength, and love work in our lives? As hard as it is to face my anxiety, and as much as I would like it to not be an issue anymore, I am thankful for the moments of complete brokenness because it is in those moments that I look to my Heavenly Father and cry out for help. It is in the darkest valleys in our lives where we can really see His glorious light shine.
So my friends, be encouraged today! Yes we all have struggles, we all fall so short of the glory of God, we make mistakes, and we stumble, but His grace is sufficient for us. We don’t need to do it anymore by our own strength, because we will probably just fail. Our job is to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, to look to Him for peace, for hope, for joy, for love, for strength, and then He will do the rest. He is the one who can take it all away, who can heal the brokenness we hold onto. No need to keep struggling anymore, this battle we’ve been fighting for so long, it has already been won. Lay the fears, the anger, the depression, the addiction, the “failures” down at His feet. He is so willing to take them from you, you just have to let Him.
