Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.
– 1 Peter 5:8
The trials will continue to come, as we have all probably seen play out time and time again. The enemy is constantly searching for another way to get at us. We have to be on high-alert at all times, guarding our hearts and our minds from his deceptive influences.
As soon as we overcome one of his obstacles, he will be waiting there with the next one.
He will try to trick you, manipulate you, and convince you to go against everything you know is true.
He wants to rob us of everything that is good, and he will do this by attempting to hit us in our weakest, most vulnerable areas.
But praise be to God! He will never allow these trials to come without giving us a way to escape..
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
– 1 Corinthians 10:13
You see, The Lord does not leave us without a way to defend ourselves. He knows the trials that we face, and He sees how incapable we are to fight against them on our own.. But through His mercy and grace, we have been equipped with The Spiritual Weapons of Warfare so that we can battle right along side The Holy One, and defeat every single opposition that comes against us.
The third spiritual weapon of warfare is The Word of God.
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
– Hebrews 4:12
This scripture says it all.. The Word of our Lord is a force to be reckoned with! It is sharper than any twoedged sword. It can break through every single wall we build up, and reach to our deepest, most secret places.
It has the power to convict, to encourage, to set our minds straight, and to break every chain that holds us in bondage.
Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and light unto my path.
– Psalms 119:105
His Word is the light in the midst of the relentless darkness.
When the rest of the world is in constant turmoil, and the lines between right and wrong start to blur, His Word is our guide, our truth.
His Word will stand the test of time. Everything else will fade.. opinions will differ, circumstances will change, but His Word will always remain.
Living in a world full of constant uncertainty, His Word is our safe place, our peace, our rock upon which we can ALWAYS stand!
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
– Isaiah 40:8
When times get tough, and everything seems to be crashing down around you, open your Bible, and breathe in every ounce of His life-giving Word.
There was a time in my teenage years where the attacks from the enemy became very intense. I remember trying to go to sleep at night, hoping to find some relief from the relentless battle that was going on, but there was none. You see, I was attempting to face the war on my own.. turning to everything besides Jesus. It wasn’t until one night when I felt I could no longer bare the weight of it all, that I finally gave in to the urge to open my Bible to the book of Psalms.
I remember reading one chapter after the next, and all of a sudden I could feel the pain begin to wash away. It was like there was a dark fog that had been surrounding me, and when I began to read those glorious, powerful words, His light shone in and the fog completely vanished.
Don’t ever underestimate the power of His Word. It is a mighty weapon, and when you speak it, the enemy will have to flee!
One thing that I love to do when I’m struggling is to just hug my Bible. It may sound silly but believe me, even just holding that precious book can move mountains. Don’t think of it as just another thing to read, realize that it is the actual words that our God spoke. It is like having a part of Him that we can literally see, and hold.
It is such a privilege for us to be able to have it.
It His gift for us, not only to help us to fight the battle, but it is there to bring more comfort than we ever thought possible.
Thou art my hiding place and my shield:
I hope in thy word.
– Psalms 119:114
Think of the prophets.. every time they were faced with yet another mountain to climb, they were given the Word of God.
Open your Bible to Jeremiah, to Isaiah, to Ezekiel, and Zechariah.. Over and over it says Then came the word of the Lord unto [insert name here]. To me this represents something big. You see, they knew there was no way that they were going to be able to make it over the next hurdle on their own. They knew they had to call out to God for direction, and for the peace and assurance that they weren’t facing this war on their own.
This is such a huge reminder to me, that in every situation we NEED The Lord to advise us, to guide us, and to set us straight.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
– 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Every single word in The Bible is given from The Lord. He gave it to His people in order to teach us, to correct us, to bring us into righteousness. Through it we will be able to accomplish the good works that he desires for us to complete.
BUT.. we must not just read His Word.. in order to receive everything that is offered to us through it, we must also obey it. We must put it into action, and apply it to every single aspect of our life.
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
– James 1:22
If we are quick to turn to His Word at the first sign of trouble, and if we are willing to obey it, and follow every direction laid out, then we will be able to withstand every tribulation.
The Word is able to convict us, and teach us wrong from right. But when we choose to ignore it’s guidance, we will soon succumb to the temptations of this world, and eventually we may turn away from God.
Thy word have I hid in my heart,
that I might not sin against thee.
– Psalms 119:11
Do not fall into the trap of the enemy! Do not think that you can figure this life out on your own.
Do not believe that whatever trial you are facing is too much for our King, or that He doesn’t care..
If you honor Him, seek Him, and purpose to abide by His Word, He is faithful to rescue you.. to bring you out of the very depths of your valley.
In Matthew 6:24 Jesus says that No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other.
Choose Jesus! Every. Single. Time! I will tell you this.. I know the hurt in this life is real.. I know there can be moments where it seems too much, and you just want to surrender.. Don’t! Do not give in.. Do not lose hope.
Open the beautiful Word of God, and embrace every single part.
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
– Isaiah 55:11
The Lord reminds us.. His Word is powerful, His Word cannot fail. If The Lord has a purpose for it, then it will always come to be.
We need to remember this when we witness to the unbelievers. If we are obedient to The Lord’s will, if we are open to His leading, then He will guide us, and speak through us. And when The Lord speaks through us, whatever His plans are will come to be. We may not see it happen right then.. but His Word does not come back void. It goes in, it speaks to the very heart of the person.. they may choose to resist it, but it will always have an impact.
When that war starts to rage, when you are desperately seeking refuge from the storm, open your Bible, cling to every word.. trust in Him, and know He is with you.
His Word is a gift.. remember that. His Word is there to protect you, to comfort you, to teach you. Apply it to your day, meditate on it in your quiet time, and hold onto it with all that you’ve got.
The Lord will never leave you comfortless. He will never leave you without a way to endure the hardships of this life..
Choose to seek Him above all else. Realize that you can search this whole earth for something to help you through your struggles, but you won’t ever find it.
The only One that can fulfill that longing in your heart is Jesus Christ.
Follow Him, serve Him, live for Him, and I promise you will never go without.
As for God, his way is perfect:
the word of the Lord is tried:
he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.
– Psalms 18:30
