Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
– James 4:7
He’s a persistent one, isn’t he? Just continuously lurking around the corner with a whole slew of tricks up his sleeve, ready to try and beat us at any moment. And as soon as those tricks don’t shake us anymore, he will be ready with a whole bag of new ones.
He will not go down without a fight.. He will continue to quietly lurk in the shadows of our minds, and our hearts.. waiting for the chance to enter in, so that he can deceive us, persuade us, and pull us away from our Heavenly Father.
He wants to take every good, pure, lovely gift from our Lord, and attempt to turn it into something ugly. He wants to change your love for your spouse into disappointment, the joy of your children into frustration, and the beauty of your relationship with Christ into a burden.
But there is hope.. our God is greater than any trick, plan, or lie of the devil. Our God is more than able to overcome anything that comes our way. If we just look to Him in the midst of the war, He is faithful to provide us with all that we need to make it out.
Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
– Luke 10:19
The Lord will never allow us to face a situation where we will not be able to overcome by relying on Him. He has already provided you with everything that you need.. turn your eyes to Jesus, and grab a hold of the spiritual weapons He has given you.
The fourth spiritual weapon of warfare is Love.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
– 1 Corinthians 13:13
Now to make one thing clear from the start, when The Bible refers to Love, it does not mean it in the way that the world does.
Love is not an emotion, feeling, or mood. It is not something that happens by chance, or when someone does something to deserve it. No sir-ee.
Love is the most precious gift from our God.
He is love, and it comes only from Him.
We are not capable of real love if we do not have a relationship with Christ. In our flesh love is not a possibility, it is only by walking in the spirit that we are able to have God’s love flow through us.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
– 1 John 4:8
You see, The Word tells us how important love is. In 1 Corinthians 13 we are told that we could have every amazing quality and talent, but if we do not have love within us then we are nothing.
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
– 1 Corinthians 13:1-2
Jesus is love. When He came to this world He embodied everything that love is. Jesus demonstrated to us the ultimate sacrifice. We mocked Him, betrayed Him, turned away from Him, but even so, He gave His life for us. That is love.
It is by the love of our Savior, that we are able to overcome all things. It is through His love that Jesus went to the cross for us. By His love we are set free from our sins, we are forgiven, we are renewed. It is by His love that we are given the ultimate gift of eternal life. We don’t have to be perfect to receive it because it is His perfect love that makes it possible.
The greatest commandment is to love The Lord with all that we are, and the second one is to love others. The Lord commands us to obey these two laws because He knows the strength that we receive when we do.
But you see, this is the last thing that the enemy wants from us. His whole goal is to turn our hearts cold towards each other. He knows that when the love of The Lord is not in us, then we won’t stand a chance. He knows that if we choose not to walk in Christ’s love then we will completely fail at whatever God is calling us to do.
Here are two key scriptures that reveal to us how we are able to overcome through His love:
Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
– 1 John 4:7
For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
– 1 John 5:4
You see, we are told that in order to overcome the world (sin, ungodliness, the attacks of the enemy) then we must be born of God. In order to be born of God we must love one another.
Lets go through some of the ways the enemy likes to attack us, and how the love of Christ will protect us..
- He will try to turn husband and wife against each other, sewing anger and bitterness in their hearts.
If they are filled with the love of Christ then they no longer need their spouse to meet their list of demands in order to “deserve” their love. Real love is not based on the ability to earn it.
- He will plant thoughts of disappointment towards our children. He wants us to see them as an annoyance, and a hassle.
But if we begin to view them with the love of The Lord, then our patience will become stronger, our words will become kinder, and our hearts will become softer.
- He will cause us to fear, doubt, and worry. But we are told:
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
– 1 John 4:18
So how do we go about obtaining this love? It’s not like the other three spiritual weapons of warfare that are much more tangible. In order to have His love in our hearts at all times, we must work at it diligently.
Firstly, we must live our lives for Him. Secondly, we must seek Him Every. Single. Day. Numerous times a day.
What is seeking Him? Well, really it’s using the three other spiritual weapons.
We must spend time reading, studying, and waiting on His Word. We must praise Him for all that He’s done/does, and all that He is to us. We must worship Him, and draw close to Him. And lastly, we must spend much time in prayer.
By doing these things, we get to know Him, understand Him, and learn what he wants us to do.
We get to experience His beautiful love for ourselves, which in turn, will encourage us to show that love to others.
The Love of God will never, fail (1 Corinthians 13). Like ever… period.
The attacks of the enemy do not stand any chance against His love.
Because of the love of Christ, we no longer have to be in bondage to the sins of this life. Our Heavenly Father loved us so much, that He gave His only son so that we would be able to gain eternal life.
Living in this world, we are surrounded by so much darkness, and really it just seems to be getting worse. But because we are followers of Jesus Christ, we have a hope that this world can never take away.
We are saved because of the love that Jesus has shown to us. Because of it, our sins have all been forgiven, we have become new creatures, and we can now truly be called the children of God.
There will always be struggles living in this world, but don’t let that break your faith, my sweet friends.
The Lord loves His children, and because of that, He will always make a way.
What shall we than say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
– Romans 8:31
Just remember when you’re facing the storms of this life, The Lord is always with you. He does not want us to surrender to the enemy’s attacks. He has equipped us with all that we need to overcome. Turn to Jesus, and use the spiritual weapons He has given you. Worship your King, pray to Him for guidance and deliverance, open your Bible and wait on His Word, and most of all, allow the love of Christ to move through you every moment of the day, and if you do all of that, then you can be certain that through The Lord, you will win the battle.
Well that’s the final part of this 4-part series about the spiritual weapons of warfare. I hope that they have encouraged you to look to Jesus in not only the difficult times, but the easy times as well. He is always good.
If you have questions, or anything you want to add, I would love to hear from you in the comments.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
