Just a closer walk with thee,
Grant it Jesus is my plea,
Daily walking close to thee
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.
This is one of my favourite songs.. the lyrics of this old hymn just speak so true about my souls’s deepest cry.
This life can take a whole lot out of us… just the daily struggles of parenting, working, marriage, finances, staying healthy, and then on top of that, you add all of the discouragement and hopelessness that is thrown at us from so many different directions.. it’s exhausting. Sometimes it feels as if there is no relief from the weight of it all.
Every day we are being bombarded by the outside influences, pressures, and ideas of how we should be.. being a Christian can get really hard when the rest of the world is trying to break you down, destroy your faith, rob you of your joy and peace. I turn on the TV hoping to find something positive to watch, but all I see is the reminder of how bad this world has become. Take a look around you and you will see how rampant sin has gotten.
Ungodliness and wickedness is no longer lurking in the shadows, but has now been given its very own spotlight. We are now being convinced that sin is just part of a person’s need for individuality, and if we question it or refuse to agree, well how dare we!
Good, upstanding, God-fearing Christian families are now being attacked and ridiculed, while celebrities and the likes of them are being praised.
I look at my three precious, still so blissfully unaware children, and my heart hurts.. Thinking of the world that they will have to grow up in is not very reassuring. The struggles they will all have to face in order to stand up and stand strong for Who they believe in are not going to be easy.
Being a Christian has never been a simple task, but now the attacks seem to be getting stronger, harsher, and more numerous than ever.
There is so much hurting, and so much sorrow surrounding us, everywhere we turn.
Even the inside of our churches have been influenced by the lies of the enemy.
Sometimes I just have to shut my eyes and my ears to it all because I don’t think my soul can take anymore of this heavy weight.
It’s so hard sometimes to hold onto the hope, to remember The Lord’s promises, and to believe with all of our hearts that this battle has already been won. The opposing side can seem so strong, so ruthless, so relentless, it’s easy to let our faith be shaken.
Oh precious Lord, please do not tarry any longer.. Come quickly sweet Jesus, we need you, this broken world needs you! Our hearts are heavy, and we’re growing tired.
But in the midst of all of this darkness, all of this brokenness, and sin, that precious little light shines.. The love of our dear Savior shines. His light can break through into even the deepest, darkest corners of this world.. His love can soften even the hardest of hearts.
I am weak, but thou art strong;
Jesus keep me from all wrong;
I’ll be satisfied as long;
As I walk, let me walk close to Thee.
Oh how I long to walk so close to Jesus.. how my heart cries out for the living God.
We need Him, brothers and sisters, we Need Him. This world is far too much for our weak and feeble selves to be able to withstand on our own.. We need Jesus, and if we don’t have Him, well we will surely fall.
Like the lyrics of this song, it must become our strongest plea to walk close beside Him. We must long for it, strive for it, do all that we possibly can to obtain that relationship with Him. Let’s not grow weary when faced with the things of this life, but lets hold onto the hope of Jesus. Let’s cling to Him with all that we’ve got.. When the storms of this life start to rage, and there seems to be no shelter from it all, Look to Jesus, look into His glorious face.
Every day we are being faced with a choice..
Do we pick the world or do we pick Jesus?
Do we walk in our flesh or do we walk in the spirit?
There is no grey area my dear friends, there is only black and white. There is of Satan and there is of God. Which path will we choose?
If it’s Jesus that we choose, then there are things that we need to follow through with. We can’t just want the protection, peace, joy, love, and strength that comes from being close to Him, but not do our part in receiving it.
So what exactly do we have to do to walk with God?
Let me first start by saying, although it really is my deepest and truest desire to walk close beside Jesus every moment of my life, I admit that there are times where I really struggle to do so. I can tell you this, the flesh is strong and it really doesn’t want to have a close relationship with God, but the spirit is stronger, if we allow it to be. Learning to ignore our flesh, and choose the spirit in every situation is a skill that we must develop.
So here are some ways that I have learned to strengthen my walk with Christ..
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
– 2 Corinthians 5:7
We worship a God that we cannot see with our eyes, or hear with our ears, there is no other way to follow Him but to do it by faith. It takes faith to hold onto our hope in Christ, while looking out around at the broken state of this world. It takes faith to push past what the enemy tells us, and to keep pressing on towards that precious prize.
Is it your desire to have that beautiful relationship with The Lord, and to overcome the struggles of this life? Then you must have faith, believe it is possible, believe that Jesus will grant you the desires of your heart, and believe that by clinging to Jesus with all that you’ve got, you will obtain the greater treasure that you have been longing for.
Study, Learn, Obey His Word
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
– Psalms 1:2
In order for us to know Him, we must know His word. We must meditate on it day and night. We must study it, and memorize it so that when the opposition of this life comes, we will have it already in our hearts to stand strong against the enemy. Unless we dedicate our time to being in His word, not just for a few minutes a day, but multiple times a day, there is no way that we are going to ever really grasp it. The Bible holds God’s truths, promises, and wisdom, it is our duty and privilege to study it with all of our heart and mind. In the Word we are also given stories and examples of many believers that have come before us.. many that have walked along side God through some of the darkest times. Let us study these people; let’s use them as inspiration and proof that with Jesus we will always overcome. And remember, after you have read it, live it!
Develop A Heart Of Worship
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
– John 4:23
I have said it once and I will say it again, worship is the key that unlocks so many of the blessings that The Lord has in store for us. We really need to make this one of our main focuses in our relationship with Him. If you don’t believe me, I encourage you to try it.. Spend some time worshiping Him, telling Him how amazing and truly wonderful He is, and watch His love, peace, and presence surround you. I know that as the days continue to grow dark, worship will be our place of refuge, our shelter from the rains. It is in your time of worship that you will be able to find real communion with God. It is where He will restore your strength, cover you in His love and peace, and protect you from the dark.
Live A Life That Honors God
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, oh Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.
– Psalms 19:14
We need to stop living our lives like the rest of the world. We need to stop pleasing our flesh, and start pleasing our Heavenly Father. His ways are above our ways, and His standards are above ours.. let’s aim to meet them, to reach them, to live like Him. The Lord is light, and in Him there is no darkness.. We cannot choose to walk in darkness because then He will not be able to draw near to us. There is enough dark in this world, let’s be the light. If you have Jesus in your heart, then you have His light in you as well.. use it. Don’t dim it in order to fit in, or to draw less attention to yourself.. Stand up for what’s right, be an example to the lost, and above all, live a life that honors God in every single part.
Focus On Prayer
Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.
– Psalms 55:17
I feel like this is a pretty obvious one, and for good reason. Prayer is our communication with The Lord, it is how we speak to Him. If we want to strengthen our relationship then it’s pretty clear that we need to spend a lot of time in prayer. And when I say a lot of time, I don’t just mean a quick,”hey, how’s it going?” in the morning before we start our day. I mean we need to spend time in the morning, in the afternoon, at night, and in between. Making sure to fit time in with Him whenever we can is key. Instead of making our talks something we do when the perfect moment strikes, we must purpose to include Him throughout our whole day.
I have shewed you all things, how so laboring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, it is more blessed to give than to receive.
Let’s live like Jesus did! When He came to this Earth, He did not live for himself, but for you and for me. He walked this world as a servant, helping anyone who asked of Him. Let’s be like that, let’s put ourselves aside, and help the people that The Lord has put in front of us. We can become so focused on ourselves, and the worries of this life, let’s learn to look beyond our nose, and reach out to others. By doing that, our joy will so quickly overshadow our despair. As we discussed earlier, there is so much struggling in this world, so many people in need, it is our responsibility to help them in the ways that we can. If we do this, I truly believe that The Lord will bless us more than we can imagine. If we step out in obedience to Him, and we help those around us, He will not only bless us, but He will meet with us, and surround us with His unfailing love.
Again, I know how rough this life can be sometimes.. it can pick you up and throw you down. But being Christians, we have a hope that the world does not have… we have Jesus, and He is so much bigger than all of the darkness out there.
Turn to Him when the enemy throws you another curve ball, look to Him when you receive another blessing, look to Him when the whys and hows of this life have left you in a state of confusion, just look to Him, sweet friend, look to Him.
You no longer need to face this life by your own strength, you just need to rely on His to pull you through.
Let go of the strong holds that have been keeping you in bondage, and just lay them all down at His feet. Take the weight off of your shoulders, and place it on His.. He is more than willing to bear it for you.
Stop trying to make the “right” decision on your own.. Let Him guide you, and direct your every step.
Keep His name always on your heart, and His words continuously in your mouth.
Stop seeing Him as an option only when the right situation or mood presents itself, but instead, make Him your first priority in every single moment of your life.
And when you do this, the things of this world will no longer have the power to discourage you, or weaken your faith, because Jesus will always be at the forefront of your mind, and His love will give you all of the strength that you need to stand tall.
When the things of the world begin to discourage you, where do you find encouragement?
How do you draw near to God?
Please let me know in the comments.
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.
In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
